NCHHSTP/DVH is recruiting for an exceptional candidate for a Health Scientist position within the Division of Viral Hepatitis (DVH), National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP). The mission of the Division of Viral Hepatitis is to bring together science and public health practice to eliminate disease and mortality caused by viral hepatitis. This position will serve as a Health Scientist on the Harm Reduction Team in the Prevention Branch, and will support the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to prevent and control viral hepatitis, with special focus on harm reduction and supporting people who use drugs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Activities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide subject matter expertise related to direct implementation and operation of syringe services programs.
  • Support program implementation related to reducing infectious diseases associated with drug use and improving the health of people who use drugs.
  • Support translation of program data into feasible recommendations through reporting, publications, and presentations.
  • Support team efforts to advance hepatitis C testing and treatment initiation among American Indian/Alaskan Native people who use drugs.
  • Provide technical assistance to cooperative agreement recipients and community partners.

Desired Qualifications:

Harm reduction subject matter expertise with specialized experience related to planning and implementing public health programs to improve the health of people who use drugs. Experience with direct harm reduction program and service implementation is preferred. Highly qualified candidates will have:

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team and interact collaboratively across teams within the division and agency.
  • Ability to build partnerships and communicate effectively with state health leaders, national partners, other governmental agencies, and community-based organizations.
  • Excellent coordination and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Additional Information:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level of in the Federal service. In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Learn more about careers at NCHHSTP.
