CDC seeks exceptional candidates for a permanent position as an Epidemiologist GS-601-14 in the Detection and Response Branch (DRB), Division of HIV Prevention (DHP), National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP).

DRB’s work focuses on detecting and responding to HIV clusters and outbreaks, a priority activity of the Division of HIV Prevention and one of four pillars of the federal Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. Initiative. This position, in the Office of the Chief in DRB, will serve as a Senior Advisor to the Branch Chief on matters of science practice and in establishing goals, objectives, and policy for HIV cluster detection and response programs.

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Serve as a Senior Advisor to the Branch Chief on matters of science practice and in establishing goals, objectives and policy formulation for disease cluster and outbreak detection and response programs.
  • Serve as a national or internationally recognized consultant and expert on epidemiological issues on critical problems in the field of epidemiology including disease cluster and outbreak detection and response.
  • Design, plan and initiate epidemiologic studies, surveys, and investigations including disease cluster and outbreak detection and response.
  • Supervise EIS Officers, interns, students, and guest researchers assigned and provide consultation and direction on conceptualization, design, implementation, and presentation of the results of epidemiological evaluation studies and surveillance projects conducted by junior scientists.
  • Review and approve the substance of reports, decisions, or other action documents to ensure that policies accurately reflect the position of the organization and the views of the agency. 
  • Provide technical advice and assistance in the development of criteria and standards for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of contract, grant, and/or cooperative agreement proposals.

Required Qualifications:

Candidate must be a U.S. citizen and meet the OPM qualification standards for an Epidemiologist at grade 14, and specialized experience including experience understanding disease clusters and outbreaks, transmission patterns, molecular epidemiology, and drug resistance; formulating policy related to infectious diseases; or responding to disease clusters and outbreaks.
